Policy
It is the policy of St. Coletta School to involve parents in their child’s education to every extent possible. It is also our practice to remove barriers to involvement whenever possible. It is also our policy and practice to train parents and caregivers on educational strategies and techniques so they can extend the routine of the school into the home and the community.
Procedure
Specifically the approach to parental involvement is three-fold. First the formation of the PTO allows parents a forum through which they can support the school and its programs. Through PTO committees, ex. Communication Committee, Education Committee and Fundraising Committee, parents will work side by side with faculty to enhance the overall school climate. In addition, PTO meetings provide educational training opportunities to parents. Second, the parent trainings for this school year are planned in response to those areas of need expressed through a survey completed by over 80% of St. Coletta parents. Finally, educators will extend more opportunities for individual training sessions with parents and invite parents to participate in a parent support group.
This year it is expected that all parents/guardians will participate in the Individual Education Plan (IEP) process. We are also developing strategies to increase attendance at IEP meetings and mid-year parent conferences. For example, teachers will offer parents flexible times and meeting locations. Parents can also participate via teleconference. Transportation and childcare may also be provided as needed to support attendance at training, PTO and IEP meetings.
In addition, we look to increase participation in special student programs by insuring that teachers provide reminders through the day to day communication books as well as through special flyers.
